The Digital SAT is a ~2 hour 14 minute adaptive test delivered on your own laptop or a school-issued device through College Board's free Bluebook app. It has two sections: Reading & Writing (64 min) and Math (70 min), each split into two modules. Your performance on Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2 (multi-stage adaptive testing).
Scoring is 400–1600 total (200–800 per section). Most colleges consider 1200+ competitive, 1400+ strong, and 1500+ elite. Scores arrive in about 2 weeks and are valid for 5 years. You can send scores to 4 colleges free on test day; additional reports cost about $14 each.
You take the SAT with a small break between sections. Bluebook includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator you can use on ALL math questions. Bring an acceptable photo ID, your admission ticket, a fully charged laptop or tablet (test centers usually have backups), and a snack for the break.
The Reading & Writing section has 54 questions across two 32-minute modules. Each question is tied to its own short passage (25–150 words). Question types include: Words in Context, Text Structure & Purpose, Cross-Text Connections, Central Ideas & Details, Command of Evidence (textual and quantitative), Inferences, Boundaries (grammar/punctuation), Form/Structure/Sense (grammar), Transitions, and Rhetorical Synthesis.
Because passages are short, you can read every word carefully — don't skim. Predict the answer before looking at choices. For Words in Context, plug your own word in first, then find the closest match. For evidence questions, the answer must directly and specifically support the claim — not just be topically related.
For grammar/Boundaries questions, know the big five errors: comma splices (independent clauses joined by a comma), subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, verb tense consistency, and modifier placement. For Transitions, identify the logical relationship between sentences (contrast, cause/effect, example, addition) before scanning the choices.
Algebra is roughly 35% of SAT Math (about 13–15 questions). Master: solving linear equations in one variable, systems of two linear equations (substitution, elimination, and graphical meaning), linear inequalities in one and two variables, and interpreting slope and y-intercept in real-world contexts.
For word problems, define variables explicitly, translate each sentence into an equation, then solve. A common trap: read the last sentence carefully — the SAT often asks for x+2 or 3x, not just x. Always circle what the question is asking for.
Use Desmos aggressively. Type equations into Desmos to graph, find intersections (systems), zeros (roots), or table values — this often beats algebraic manipulation for speed and accuracy.
Advanced Math is roughly 35% of SAT Math. Key topics: quadratic equations (factoring, quadratic formula, completing the square), the discriminant (b² − 4ac tells you number of real solutions), vertex form y = a(x−h)² + k, function notation f(x), exponential growth/decay, and polynomial behavior.
Know all three forms of a quadratic: standard y = ax² + bx + c (y-intercept is c), factored y = a(x − r₁)(x − r₂) (roots are r₁ and r₂), and vertex y = a(x − h)² + k (vertex at (h, k)). Practice converting between forms — many questions test this directly.
For exponential functions y = a·b^x, a is the initial value and b is the growth (b>1) or decay (0<b<1) factor. If a population 'doubles every 5 years,' that's y = a·2^(t/5). Practice translating word problems into this form.
Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (~15% of Math): ratios, unit conversions, percentages, percent change, mean/median/mode/range, standard deviation (conceptual, not computed), scatterplots, two-way tables, probability, and sample-to-population inferences with margin of error.
Geometry & Trigonometry (~15% of Math): area/volume formulas (given in Bluebook reference sheet — memorize anyway), circles (arc length, sector area, radians ↔ degrees), right-triangle trig (SOH-CAH-TOA), the Pythagorean theorem and its special triangles (3-4-5, 5-12-13, 30-60-90, 45-45-90), and similar/congruent triangles.
For percent change: (new − old)/old × 100. For probability: (favorable outcomes)/(total outcomes). For two-way tables: identify the correct row/column subgroup before dividing. For circles: full circle = 2π rad = 360°; arc length = r·θ (radians); sector area = ½ r²·θ (radians).
Pacing: Reading & Writing gives you ~71 seconds per question; Math gives you ~95 seconds. If a question stalls you for more than 90 seconds, flag it in Bluebook and move on — you can return before the module ends. Never leave a question blank; there is no wrong-answer penalty.
Guessing strategy: eliminate two choices you know are wrong, then guess. When truly stuck, pick a single 'letter of the day' (say, B) and use it for all pure guesses — this maximizes your expected value on a random draw.
