How to Register & Sit for the SAT
Official 7-step process via College Board — the only organization that administers the SAT.

    Go to satsuite.collegeboard.org and click 'Sign Up' — use your legal name exactly as it appears on your photo ID.

    The SAT is offered ~7 times/year in the U.S. (Aug, Oct, Nov, Dec, Mar, May, Jun). Register 5+ weeks ahead to secure your preferred center.

    Test day
    Bring: valid photo ID, printed admission ticket, fully charged laptop/iPad + charger, water, and a snack for the break. Arrive by 7:45 AM. Testing takes ~2 hr 14 min plus one 10-minute break.
Test fee: ~US $68 domestic, $111+ international. Score: 400–1600 (each section 200–800). Duration: ~2 hr 14 min. Score validity: 5 years. No wrong-answer penalty — always guess.

Class Notes

The Digital SAT is a ~2 hour 14 minute adaptive test delivered on your own laptop or a school-issued device through College Board's free Bluebook app. It has two sections: Reading & Writing (64 min) and Math (70 min), each split into two modules. Your performance on Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2 (multi-stage adaptive testing).

Scoring is 400–1600 total (200–800 per section). Most colleges consider 1200+ competitive, 1400+ strong, and 1500+ elite. Scores arrive in about 2 weeks and are valid for 5 years. You can send scores to 4 colleges free on test day; additional reports cost about $14 each.

You take the SAT with a small break between sections. Bluebook includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator you can use on ALL math questions. Bring an acceptable photo ID, your admission ticket, a fully charged laptop or tablet (test centers usually have backups), and a snack for the break.

2. Reading & Writing — Craft, Structure & Ideas

Class Notes

The Reading & Writing section has 54 questions across two 32-minute modules. Each question is tied to its own short passage (25–150 words). Question types include: Words in Context, Text Structure & Purpose, Cross-Text Connections, Central Ideas & Details, Command of Evidence (textual and quantitative), Inferences, Boundaries (grammar/punctuation), Form/Structure/Sense (grammar), Transitions, and Rhetorical Synthesis.

Because passages are short, you can read every word carefully — don't skim. Predict the answer before looking at choices. For Words in Context, plug your own word in first, then find the closest match. For evidence questions, the answer must directly and specifically support the claim — not just be topically related.

For grammar/Boundaries questions, know the big five errors: comma splices (independent clauses joined by a comma), subject-verb agreement, pronoun agreement, verb tense consistency, and modifier placement. For Transitions, identify the logical relationship between sentences (contrast, cause/effect, example, addition) before scanning the choices.

Key Terms

  • Command of Evidence: Questions asking which quote or data point best supports a claim.
  • Rhetorical Synthesis: Questions giving bullet-point notes and asking you to combine them to meet a stated goal.
  • Independent clause: A group of words that could stand alone as a complete sentence.

Strategies

  • Read every word — passages are short enough to reward careful reading, not skimming.
  • Predict your answer before looking at the choices to avoid being trapped by attractive distractors.
  • For grammar, ask 'what is the simplest correct version?' — the SAT rewards concise, standard usage.

3. Math — Algebra & Linear Systems

Class Notes

Algebra is roughly 35% of SAT Math (about 13–15 questions). Master: solving linear equations in one variable, systems of two linear equations (substitution, elimination, and graphical meaning), linear inequalities in one and two variables, and interpreting slope and y-intercept in real-world contexts.

For word problems, define variables explicitly, translate each sentence into an equation, then solve. A common trap: read the last sentence carefully — the SAT often asks for x+2 or 3x, not just x. Always circle what the question is asking for.

Use Desmos aggressively. Type equations into Desmos to graph, find intersections (systems), zeros (roots), or table values — this often beats algebraic manipulation for speed and accuracy.

Key Terms

  • Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b, where m is slope and b is y-intercept.
  • System of equations: Two or more equations solved simultaneously; solutions are the points that satisfy all of them.
  • Consistent / inconsistent: A system with at least one solution is consistent; parallel lines with no solution are inconsistent.

Strategies

  • Graph everything in Desmos when possible — it eliminates arithmetic errors.
  • Circle exactly what the question asks; the SAT loves to trick you into answering for the wrong variable.
  • For 'no solution' or 'infinite solutions' questions, remember: parallel lines have the same slope but different intercepts.
SAT 300
4. Math — Advanced Math (Quadratics, Exponentials, Functions)

Class Notes

Advanced Math is roughly 35% of SAT Math. Key topics: quadratic equations (factoring, quadratic formula, completing the square), the discriminant (b² − 4ac tells you number of real solutions), vertex form y = a(x−h)² + k, function notation f(x), exponential growth/decay, and polynomial behavior.

Know all three forms of a quadratic: standard y = ax² + bx + c (y-intercept is c), factored y = a(x − r₁)(x − r₂) (roots are r₁ and r₂), and vertex y = a(x − h)² + k (vertex at (h, k)). Practice converting between forms — many questions test this directly.

For exponential functions y = a·b^x, a is the initial value and b is the growth (b>1) or decay (0<b<1) factor. If a population 'doubles every 5 years,' that's y = a·2^(t/5). Practice translating word problems into this form.

Key Terms

  • Discriminant: b² − 4ac; positive = 2 real solutions, zero = 1, negative = 0 real solutions.
  • Vertex: The minimum or maximum point of a parabola, at x = −b/(2a).
  • Exponential decay: A function y = a·b^x with 0 < b < 1; value shrinks toward zero over time.

Strategies

  • When a quadratic won't factor cleanly, use the quadratic formula immediately — don't waste time guessing.
  • For function questions with tables or graphs, plug the given input into Desmos and read the output.
  • For 'a in terms of b' questions, plug in easy numbers, solve numerically, then match to the algebraic choices.
SAT 400
5. Math — Problem Solving, Data Analysis & Geometry

Class Notes

Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (~15% of Math): ratios, unit conversions, percentages, percent change, mean/median/mode/range, standard deviation (conceptual, not computed), scatterplots, two-way tables, probability, and sample-to-population inferences with margin of error.

Geometry & Trigonometry (~15% of Math): area/volume formulas (given in Bluebook reference sheet — memorize anyway), circles (arc length, sector area, radians ↔ degrees), right-triangle trig (SOH-CAH-TOA), the Pythagorean theorem and its special triangles (3-4-5, 5-12-13, 30-60-90, 45-45-90), and similar/congruent triangles.

For percent change: (new − old)/old × 100. For probability: (favorable outcomes)/(total outcomes). For two-way tables: identify the correct row/column subgroup before dividing. For circles: full circle = 2π rad = 360°; arc length = r·θ (radians); sector area = ½ r²·θ (radians).

Key Terms

  • Margin of error: The range of uncertainty in a sample estimate; a wider margin means less confidence.
  • SOH-CAH-TOA: sin = opp/hyp, cos = adj/hyp, tan = opp/adj.
  • Radian: Angle measure where 1 radian = arc length equal to the radius; 2π rad = 360°.

Strategies

  • Memorize the special right triangles — they appear on almost every test.
  • For probability questions, always confirm the total (denominator) before selecting the numerator.
  • Draw diagrams for every geometry question — even if one is given, redraw it larger and label everything.
SAT 500
6. Test-Day Execution, Timing & Score Improvement

Class Notes

Pacing: Reading & Writing gives you ~71 seconds per question; Math gives you ~95 seconds. If a question stalls you for more than 90 seconds, flag it in Bluebook and move on — you can return before the module ends. Never leave a question blank; there is no wrong-answer penalty.

Guessing strategy: eliminate two choices you know are wrong, then guess. When truly stuck, pick a single 'letter of the day' (say, B) and use it for all pure guesses — this maximizes your expected value on a random draw.

Bluebook tools you must practice: the flag/review screen, the answer eliminator (strike-through), the built-in Desmos calculator, and the annotation tool for Reading & Writing. Learn each in a real timed practice test — not on test day.

Score improvement: after each practice test, log every missed question with the topic + why you missed it (concept, careless, timing). Drill the top 3 topics each week. Two full-length adaptive tests per week + focused topic drills is the fastest way to gain 100+ points in 6–8 weeks.

  • Flag & review: Bluebook feature that lets you mark a question and return to it later within the same module.
  • Answer eliminator: Strike-through tool to visually cross out wrong choices — dramatically improves guessing.
  • Error log: A personal spreadsheet of every question you got wrong, with topic and cause of the error.

Strategies

  • Never leave a question blank — there is no penalty for wrong answers on the SAT.
  • Practice with the actual Bluebook app, not paper — the interface itself takes practice.
  • Sleep 8 hours the night before test day and eat a real breakfast; cognitive fatigue costs more points than any single topic.
